History and Milestones

  • 1902 New York City Judge Julius Mayer asks 90 men to each befriend a boy who has come before the court.
  • 1919 Jewish Big Brother Association of Boston incorporated.  
  • 1949 Big Brother Association of Boston (BBAGB) organized with the assistance of the Boston Jewish Big Brother agency; launched as interracial, interfaith, non-sectarian mentoring service with 10 matches.  
  • 1958 Big Brothers of America chartered by United States Congress.
  • 1974 Branch office opened in Brockton.  
  • 1977 Big Brothers of America and Big Sisters International merge to become Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA).
  • 1984-1986 Branch offices opened in Lynn, Malden, Cambridge, Roxbury, and Quincy. 
  • 1986 Big Brother Association of Greater Boston opens South Shore office in Quincy.
  • 1987 BBAGB Board elects Lee Powers Carlson as first female board president.  
  • 1988 New BBBSA national headquarters in Philadelphia dedicated by Vice President George H.W. Bush.
  • 1988 40th Anniversary Endowment Campaign brings endowment to $1 million.  
  • 1991 BBAGB receives top-quality rating from BBBSA during 5 year evaluation process; maintains rating to present.  
  • 1996 BBAGB serves 500 matches and is recognized as one of the leading Big Brothers agencies in the USA.  
  • 1996 BBAGB organizes Large Agency Alliance to share best practices with the nation’s 25 largest Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies.  
  • 1997 BBAGB launches affiliate Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Ann and matches our first Big and Little Sister.  
  • 1997 BBAGB board approves Vision 2000 strategic growth plan to quadruple number of active matches to 2000 by the year 2004.  
  • 1997 General Colin Powell and America’s living Presidents launch America’s Promise with Big Brothers Big Sisters serving as a key partner and advisor.  
  • 1999 Big Brother Association of Greater Boston renamed Big Brothers of Massachusetts Bay (BBMB) to better reflect the more than 110 towns and neighborhoods we served at the time.  
  • 2000 BBMB selected by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America as a Team 2000 All Star for 2nd consecutive year.  
  • 2001 BBMB launches pilot Bigs In Schools program, providing even more options and flexibility for volunteers.  
  • 2001 BBMB passes 1,000 active match milestone.  
  • 2002 BBMB selected to serve as a national pilot for launching Big Brothers Big Sisters revised service delivery model.  
  • 2003 BBMB board approves Vision 6000 strategic growth plan to triple the number of active matches to 6000 by the year 2010  
  • 2004 Big Brothers Big Sisters celebrates 100 years of service.  
  • 2004 Forbes magazine recognizes Big Brothers Big Sisters as one of the top 10 national charities.  
  • 2005 BBMB surpasses the 2000 served match mark.  
  • 2006 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Attleboro and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands merge with BBMB  
  • 2006 Big Brothers of Massachusetts Bay renamed Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay (BBBSMB) to better reflect the more then 700 female matches in the 155 towns and neighborhoods  we serve.
