Donation FAQ

Research has shown that a Little Brother or Little Sister matched for one year or more in a one-to-one friendship is more likely to graduate from high school, attend college and demonstrate more respect for adults. Littles are also more likely to avoid alcohol, drugs and violence.

Are donations tax deductible?
Yes. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay is a 501(c)(3). Donations are tax deductible to the extent that they exceed the value of goods and services that may be received in exchange

How is the money used?
Donations are used to fund ongoing operations, including the cost of a large team of professionals who recruit and screen volunteers, make the matches between individual Bigs and Littles, and provide ongoing support to each match so it thrives. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay does not own and operate youth service facilities.

Why does it cost something to support a match that is staffed by volunteers?
We take great care in selecting volunteers in order to provide the best possible match we can for each and every child in our program. Although volunteer Bigs donate over one hundred thousand hours of one-to-one time with their Littles annually, each of those hours requires support.

What other types of donation do you accept?
First and foremost we are exceptionally grateful for the donation of time by our volunteers—without them we could not run programs for youth. We are also very grateful for donations of goods and services from our many corporate supporters, either as items for our fundraising auctions or to support our ongoing activities. Generous donations of tickets to local events and free or discounted admissions to venues make it possible for our Littles to experience a wider world.

Does Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay share its donations?
BBBSMB raises funds to support its own operations, as do the other Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates in the Greater Boston area. Each affiliate determines the focus of its own programs and plans its finances accordingly.

What does the Big Brothers Big Sisters Foundation do?
The Foundation is a separate organization that collects and processes donations of used clothing and household goods. The surplus from these operations is shared among several Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates in Eastern Massachusetts, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay
