Volunteer on Cape Cod

Help make a difference in our youth through mentorships on Cape Cod.

Mentor on Cape Cod & the Islands

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod and the Islands, a proud member of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay family, is the only one-to-one youth mentoring organization serving Cape Cod and the Islands. Our program is proven to produce several positive long-term and short-term youth development outcomes. Research shows that a match of just one year helps kids stay in school, avoid violent and risky behavior, and gain confidence.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay is one of the leading agencies in the nation in the number of matches lasting at least one year (75%), as well as the average length of our matches (38.4 months). Youth involved in our program become more adept at having quality relationships with adults, which contributes to their abilities to advocate for themselves throughout life.

We are currently enrolling youth across Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard. Learn more about enrolling your child here >>

Our Community

  • Barnstable and Dukes County have some of the highest juvenile crime rate in Massachusetts.
  • In the past 5 years, the Cape & Islands has seen a 65% increase in families living at or below the poverty level-- the highest increase in the state.
  • There are more than 2,800 children between the ages of 7-12 living in single parent, under-resourced households on Cape Cod & the Islands.

Our Proven Impact

The results of our program are clear. With the care and adult mentoring of compassionate Bigs, local children gain confidence, do better in school and stay on the right path to reach their potential. “Big Brothers Big Sisters is there throughout your match,”says Doris Canose, a Big Sister. “Their encouragement and support helped me to be the best Big Sister to my Little Sister Shannon. Watching her succeed regardless of enormous obstacles to become the first in her family to go on to college has filled my life with joy. “

·         90% of children with Big Brothers and Big Sisters say they’ve made better life choices.

·         76% said that their Big helped them learn right from wrong.

·         77% of our Littles report doing better in school.

 Our Bigs and Our Littles:

Mercy became a Little Sister after her dad died. Her mom, overwhelmed with the care and responsibility of raising her children, approached Big Brothers Big Sisters. Mercy was paired with a Big Sister, Sue, who has transformed the girl’s life.

“Sue listens to my ideas and lets me talk about things I’m worried about,” says Mercy. “She’s always there for me and I know that I can count on her when I need advice from a grown-up I trust.”

When Kenny was referred to us, he was lacking any male role models in his life. His mom was in poor health and was hoping to find a great support and friend for Kenny.

“Thanks to Mike, Kenny has a man in his life he can count on,” says Kenny’s mom. “He talks about school and life in a way I had never imagined possible. Without Mike, I don’t know where Kenny would be.”
